Thomas Kelly School Hosts Instrument Drive for Needy Group Program
Richard Daily, chair of the fine arts department and director of groups at Thomas Kelly College Preparatory, has more students in groups than in instruments.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, students often shared instruments, using individual mouthpieces but using the instrument itself in rotation. Out of concern for the health of the students, this practice was abandoned, leaving the school music program at an impasse.
At the same time, participation in school orchestra programs has increased despite the pandemic, with last year’s practices and performances taking place through Zoom conferences. With the student numbers planned for the 2021-2022 school year, there will not be enough instruments for everyone.
“We just don’t have enough instruments to support the level of participation that our music programs are seeing,” Daily said. “Our orchestral program for the fall semester 2021 includes approximately 300 beginners, 90 intermediate students and approximately 50 advanced students. In addition to our popular jazz band and ensemble, we have a rapidly growing orchestral program.
The program needs of Thomas Kelly’s group caught the attention of Bikes & Music whose mission is to help the youth of Chicagoland.
Bikes & Music is looking for donations of used musical instruments in good condition. Instruments will be cleaned and maintained before being provided to Thomas Kelly high school students.
