The “Winds & Classics” concert marks the return of the group’s performances in person on September 23

Sasser Fine Arts Hall at the North Campus West, 3000 NW 83rd Street, Gainesville. Due to the safety precautions taken by SF during the COVID-19 pandemic, the public will be limited to 75 people. Under the direction of Assistant Music Professor and Orchestra Director David Smith, the ensemble’s 15 students will perform musical classics by composers whose works range from the early to mid-20th century.e century to the present day. Smith will present each selection before it is made.
“This concert marks our return to in-person performances after having to perform on video last year due to the pandemic,” Smith said. “The band is an outlet for many students, not just music students, and they have all demonstrated diligence, adaptability and patience while learning to use new security protocols. They were ready to do whatever it takes to be able to play music and protect each other. “
Safety protocols include bags that wrap around wind instruments without muffling sound and specialized masks that are split down the middle to allow musicians to play. Rehearsals at the Lyceum, the auditorium of the renovated E Building, have recently gone from having socially estranged band members in audience chairs to everyone together on stage.
“Having all of the group members on stage helps the students feel more connected and makes the group tighter; that’s a huge difference, ”Smith explained. “Our students have worked very hard to prepare for this concert in a short period of time, and they are delighted to be performing in front of a live audience. We hope to see you at the concert!
Smith is a trombonist with a university education in jazz. He has performed with legendary jazz trombonist George Buster Cooper of the Duke Ellington Orchestra and other prominent jazz artists in New York City, including Wycliffe Gordon, Marcus Roberts, Jason Marsalis and Vincent Gardner.
Winds and Classics is organized and sponsored by the Department of Fine Arts and Entertainment Technology at Santa Fe College. For more information on the Wind Ensemble and SF bands, call David Smith at 352-395-5313.
