The Buoys returns with new single and video, ‘Bad Habit’
Sydney band The Buoys have shared their 2021 debut new music, “Bad Habit”.
The single premiered earlier this week on triple j’s House and watered program before being officially released today (May 13). This is their first release since their 2020 EP, “ All This Talking Gets Us Nowhere, ” which featured the singles “ WAH ”, “ Linda ” and “ Already gone. ”
Since the release of the EP, the band members have taken care of other projects. Lead singer Zoe Catterall has joined two new groups, Dead Witch and Green Screen, while drummer Tess Wilkin has formed jangle-pop group Megafauna. Lead guitarist Hilary Geddes continues to perform both with Jackie Brown Jr. and as a solo jazz guitarist, while bassist Courtney Cunningham has released a new single with the indie-rock quintet Good Pash.
The release is accompanied by a music video, directed by Clover Ryan. The clip sees the band playing dodge ball against a team of musicians from Sydney – including Dom O’Connor of Organs and Lewis Armstrong of Blue Velvet.

In a press release, Geddes explained that “Bad Habit” was written about what she describes as “dryer relationships”.
“The two people [are] going around and around, falling into the same toxic patterns and not necessarily being able to stop these behaviors, even if they want to, ”she said.
Wilkin also explained the motivation behind the music video for “ Bad Habit ” in a separate statement. “We had to try to encourage each other with a lot of heckling and encouragement to give him the energy he needed,” she said. “The photo where Hilary has one in the head was excellent to shoot.”
The group will launch “Bad Habit” with headlining shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane in late May and early June.
