Teen Mayo songwriters win nationwide competition
TY students Aisling Mullarkey and Hope Gillespie from St. Mary’s High School in Ballina impressed famous Irish singer-songwriter Damien Dempsey with their inspiring composition “Skies of Blue”.
Hope, who is from Ballina, and Aisling, who lives near Enniscrone in County Sligo, composed the song for the 2021 Sing All Your Cares Away song contest, organized by the organization Inspire You Ireland in collaboration with Damien Dempsey.
Inspire You Ireland provides a safe platform where young Irish people can develop ideas and communicate their passions in real life.
Inspired by Dempsey’s hit song ‘Sing All Your Cares Away’, the organization launched its song contest to encourage young Irish musicians to sing about a better future.
Aisling and Hope certainly rose to the challenge.
Both are avid music students and have performed local feiseanna and local music productions from an early age.
They were both scheduled to star in their school’s annual musical this year, but production was unable to move forward due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
In “ Skies of Blue, ” the girls urge listeners to look past the challenges and concerns associated with the Covid-19 lockdown and not to despair as clearer days lie ahead.
Announcing the winners on social media last Friday night, Damien Dempsey praised the girls for producing a track filled with hope and positivity.
The video has now been created on the Inspiring You Ireland Facebook page (@Inspiringyouirl), where contest organizers called on people to share the girls’ song.
They also praised the accompanying video for the track (shot by local company, Suas Drones) which features beautiful scenes from Ballina and Enniscrone.
Hope and Aisling were supported in their composition by SS music teacher from St. Mary’s, Ms. Regina Deacy, while local musician Mark O’Donnell from Billow Wood assisted with the accompaniment and recording.
The director of St. Mary’s SS, Mr. Robert O’Reilly, congratulated the girls, Mrs. Deacy and all who helped with the production and recording of “Skies of Blue”, which he described as a beautiful composition with a powerful message for everyone.
“The sky is not only blue for Aisling and Hope, the sky is also the limit for these two wonderful girls,” he said.
As part of their award, the girls will meet Damien Dempsey in Ballina later this year, subject to Covid-19 regulations.
