Struggling Toronto bar gets lifeline from award-winning band
A popular band draws crowds to a Toronto bar that, like most, has had no luck.
Tonight Bar has not only endured the recurring blockages all businesses have had to deal with, the stretch from Queen to Parkdale where they are located has been closed to road repairs to streetcar tracks for months now, making their business even better. difficult to access.
But before people were even allowed to return to space, the music was starting to roar inside.
Lindsay-born rock band The Strombellas approached the bar in early July as they prepared to reopen, and owner Clamp jumped at the chance.
“It was a good deal for all of us. The Strumbellas couldn’t shoot and wanted to create some cool new content for their fans,” Clamp told blogTO.
“In turn, it gave me the opportunity to test our equipment and make sure I always remember how to use it. Not to mention it draws more attention to our still relatively new space. , through the videos. “
With alternative country, gothic folk and indie rock influences, The Strombellas are best known for their catchy pop hits Sprits and Salvation. Tonight Bar offers an intimate and original backdrop of a corner covered with cassettes.
So far he has already set the stage for an acoustic performance by Diane shot in black and white.
While recording, band members Jon Hembrey and Izzy Ritchie suggested that the venue would also be the perfect location for some performances from their side project, Full Rigged Ship, which is influenced by East Coast instrumental music and Irish, and that’s what Clamp calls “great drinking music.”
They perform every two weeks on Friday evenings since the bar reopens in mid-July.
“They drew a constant large crowd, every time,” Clamp says.
“The timing of Full Rigged Ship to bring their show to us was a big help in getting a favorable audience through the gates.”
Not only do these small shows offer a chance to see exclusive performances from a side project from a large group, they are PWYC, although seating is limited and you have to be over 19.
The Tonight Bar has also hosted many other musical and comedy shows, and they also host private events. Needless to say, this company is doing everything it can to stay upright.
