Singer-songwriter Tolu Makay releases enjoyable summer single ‘Aye’
Fresh off the success of her cover of Saw Doctors ‘N17’, Afro-Irish singer-songwriter Tolü Makay has released her latest single ‘Aye’ just in time for summer.
The upbeat, pop song of the world is the second single to be released ahead of the artist’s debut album due in early 2022.
Originally, Tolü was to travel to Nigeria to create “Aye” and reunite with her family, whom she had not seen since the start of the pandemic.
However, travel restrictions forced Tolü to get creative, teaming up with producer friends from Nigeria to bring the kids together and create a mini-choir for the song.
Tolü said: “ I literally spent six hours on the phone working remotely with the kids as well as the Nigerian percussionist we hired for the day – an absolute legend. He played the shakers, the conga, the talking drum.
“ It was intense and I would have really loved to have been there in person, but despite the current travel bans, we still managed to create this magical trail. ”
Accompanying Tolü’s soft and silky voice, a steady build of Nigerian percussion perfectly sums up the anticipation of a summer of freedom, while awakening the joy that may be sleeping within us.
“Aye means life in Yoruba. Much of what makes us who we are comes from our childhood. I want this song to celebrate life and the child we forget we were. We are who we are because of this child.
“I added my oriki that my grandmother blessed me with, she sings it in this song. Oriki is a Yoruba “attributive epithet” given to you. Who you are called to be, she said.
Drawing influences from Erykah Badu, Nina Simone and Nigerian / French singer / songwriter Asa, Tolü has been on an upward trajectory since releasing his first single “ Goodbye ” in 2018.
At the end of 2020, the veteran singer released her debut EP Being, bringing her huge success just before wowing the masses with her rendition of The Saw Doctors “ N17 ”, accompanied by the RTE Concert Orchestra, placing her firmly on the menu.
With his debut album slated for early 2022, it seems like it’s only more and more for Tolü Makay.
