Rhett Repko Kicks Off Summer Songs With “Late Nights”
Rhett repko picked up the guitar at age 15 with a clear preference for his own stories. He didn’t mind playing covers, but the singer / songwriter, from Annapolis, MD, wanted something original. “I just started writing my own chord progressions and melodies,” Repko tells American Songwriter. “I then studied music production in college at UMBC and began to hone in on it heavily with countless late nights in the recording studio.
What emerged from these sessions was Repko’s unfiltered version of modern alternative pop. He began to furiously infuse his pop inspirations into each of his songs. Sometimes Repko even pulls from his favorite ’50s tracks. “I’m always excited about the sounds of my song, whether it’s a certain guitar sound, a unique synth, or a vocal effect. Says Repko. “Since I really love many genres and types of music, my goal is to write songs with all of these influences. That’s why I feel like I’m never short of inspiration. There is always another sound that I haven’t used yet that I want to put in a new song of my own.
Repko broke their creative process yet again by highlighting their most productive head spaces. “Whenever I go through something it’s when I tend to write my faster and more visceral,” he clarified. “During those times, I’d rather not have this thing to write about, but it’s usually the only thing I know how to do at this point. So I take this emotion that I feel and box it and put it in a song. Then, this emotion endures forever through the music. “
All of these movements through music and life have resulted in an impressive career so far as a freelance artist. Recently, Repko made his debut with his single “Late Nights” which shows the artist’s ability to turn a tune. The track playfully prefigures the season of long days and summer breezes.
“Musically, I was just trying to write a nice, catchy, easy-to-listen rock song,” Repko said. “I didn’t even consider it a single because of the way the melodies flowed at the beginning. But after listening to the song more and more, I realized that the song had this particular innocence and I felt it would be nice to release it as a single and share it with the fans.
He continued, “The song for me is about living in the moment with your best friend who is already your lover or who is slowly turning into your lover. It’s about not worrying about anything else in the world when you’re with them. It doesn’t matter what you do either, it’s the simple things. Like watching a movie, looking for food, driving late at night. Just you and them who exist in the world together. ”
Just existing together in the midst of the warmth of familiarity creates a sense of joy that bounces throughout “Late Nights”. Repko explained more precisely that the line, It feels good to love again, know you are my best friend, is the key to the track.
“Sometimes when you go through dark times in your life or dark relationships, you don’t know if you’ll come back to the positive side of things. So when you’ve finally reached that point of being able to love freely again and have a new best friend that you trust, it’s really such a feeling of freedom and new beginnings, ”he said.
