After DC-area rock band Two Inch Astronaut went on hiatus in 2018, Sam Goblin decamped to the Midwest and started making music as Mister Goblin. He’s based in Indiana, but to build his backing band, he tapped into Chicago’s talent pool: the April Album Trio. Rabbit (Exploding in Sound) features drummer Seth Engel of power-pop project Options (among several other bands) and bassist Aaron O’Neill of post-grunge trio Cumbie. Mister Goblin’s previous “full band” sound sounded loose and light, but Engel and O’Neill help reinforce it: you can hear their influence from the first song, “Military Discount,” which launches Goblin’s hoarse cry with a boost. – inducing blows. Engel and O’Neill also emphasize the sweetness of the heartsong on Goblin’s sleeve by throwing it into relief, and he helps their freakout midsong in “Over the Moon” calm down with his honeyed vocal hook. Openers Black Seinfeld is a new hip-hop duo made up of two local solo MCs: rapper-producer Malci and rapper Fluidi-G. When they debuted in March, Season 1 (Why? Records), both deliver performances that add polish to Malci’s rambunctious output – Fluidi-G’s half-sung verses in particular make loud bends peaceful.
