Hello, today is Monday March 28, 2022 and THIS is your eye on Annapolis Daily briefs.
OK, you have until September for something, but go to DC to see the immersive Van Gogh experience. It’s incredible. . in the northeast of the Brentwood section and get this, plenty of free parking. There’s an Alamo Drafthouse theater right next door and a cool beer garden called Metro Bar. Admission is like $45 but so worth it! OK, lots of news, so let’s go, shall we?
That’s exciting! Rams Head is hosting a Songwriters Festival in Annapolis this fall. Dates are still up in the air, but check out the Key West Songwriters Festival – they put that one on too! But they’re planning more than 100 music makers in intimate venues across the city for several days. Small intimate performances, discussions, panels and more. Some will be free and some will be chargeable. It’s a perfect addition to the Annapolis art scene…just like the Annapolis Film Festival! Stay tuned to EyeOnAnnapolis.net for dates and details.
Congratulations to Constance Polamalu from Zachary’s Jewelers. She was recognized as 20 Under 40 in Jewelry Retail by Jewelers of America. That’s a big deal… 20 people selected nationally by the top association in the industry and she’s here in Annapolis? Constance is brilliant and has really brought new light and vision to Zachary’s – Steve Samaras will eagerly admit! So have a good trip! And stay tuned, we’ll talk to Steve and Constance again in about a week!
Six Flags America is open for the season. Saturdays and Sundays until Memorial Day, then daily after that. During the offseason, there have been some changes and improvements. The wooden roller coaster has been retraced, they’ve booked three new festivals in the park, including a Viva La Fiesta in May. More benches. More food. Landscaping and a mobile application that will reduce your time waiting in queues. Looks like they upped the game this year. And if you’re 16+ and looking for seasonal work, they’re hiring. $15 per hour with many open positions – visit sixflagsjobs.com
Here is a great free concert. WAE or World Artists Experiences brings a world famous Estonian choir to the region. The Collegium Musicale will present a free concert tomorrow night at Arnold’s Gloria Dei Lutheran Church at 7 p.m. And it will be an American tour premiere of a piece that has just been completed and entitled “For Ukraine”. Again tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. Gloria Dei Lutheran Church on College Parkway. A free concert by a world-renowned choir! And like the Asbury United Methodist Church here in Annapolis, their pews are seriously comfy!
And speaking of Ukraine. On WEDNESDAY evenings, all restaurants in the Irish Restaurant Company– Galway Bay, Brian Boru, Killarney Houseand Pirate’s Cove will organize fundraising dinners for Ukraine and refugees. They will be offering a 3-course meal for $25 of which $10 will go to Hand To Hand, an organization that hopes to provide 50 euros a month to refugee host families in Slovakia. Dine in or take away. Noon to close!
A little out of the way, but April 9th is a date for a big party – maybe see if that tux tux needs to come out to fit this COVID 15. But the Hospice of the Chesapeake will be hosting its gala again this year in person (first time in two years) at the Live! Hotel in Arundel Mills. The always fun Reagan years will play and of course an amazing dinner, drinks and auction. This year’s theme is Under a Tuscan Sky and tickets are on sale now…so check out if the whimsical duds are for you then go buy a ticket at hospicechesapeake.org/2022-gala
And you all know how excited I am for the Annapolis Film Festival. I plan to be unavailable Thursday through Sunday when it’s here in town, and I’ve had the pleasure of chatting with a handful of filmmakers for some quick bonus capsules. Check out the one with John Patton Ford who directed Emily the Criminal with Aubrey Plaza that we dropped on Friday – the one I’m looking forward to! We’ll be releasing bonus pods for the festival all week. But not today…. today is a big day and a big exclusive announcement. We’ll unveil this year’s Bands in the Sand headliner from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and Annapolsi Subaru. Tickets are not yet on sale. May 2 is that date, but we spoke with Billy from Annapolis Subaru and John from CBF to secure the exclusive – which drops at noon today! But here’s a hint – it’s a BIG Philadelphia name that isn’t Hall and Oates, Patti Labelle or Will Smith. But I guarantee you will love it!
And speaking of pods…did you catch the one with Tex from Changing Patterns Psychotherapy? It went a little longer than usual, but I thought he was a fascinating guy. More fascination next week – Liquor Mart and Deli – if you’ve ever wondered about that red and yellow building on the corner of West and Generals/Defense Freeways – we’ve got the scoop!
Remember Maryland Chicken Wing Festival is back in town on April 2 at the fairgrounds and it gets better every year. So if you love wings, head over to ABCEventsinc.com and get tickets! It looks like a fantastic day and right now the weather seems cool and sunny all day! Perfect for a wing festival. Better than 90 and humid for sure!
And as we close…hope you all have to come out for Annapolis Restaurant Week. This whole “no carbs for John for Lent” thing went out the window last week for sure! But we had one last gift card to offer and it was a draw. We did this last night and drew 743…..and the closest answer was 777…damn close…Mark Rinaldi. brand — if you’re listening, shoot me a mailing address and you’ll have a $50 gift card from McGarvey’s directed to you! Thank you to everyone who played last week – congratulations to the winners – enjoy your meals. And once again thank you to the Downtown Annapolis Partnership for being, well, a great partner!
OK, that’s it for the news, but first a quick thank you to our sponsors for today’s Daily News Brief– Solar energy servicesthe Kristi Neidhardt Northrop Realty, a Long and Foster Company, Rehab 2 Perform and Annapolis Film Festival Team
