Fightmilk – Candidate – Kerrang!
Contender, the second LP from South Londoners Fightmilk, encapsulates many different sounds with a punk tendency. Indie, pop-punk and alt.pop are all found on this album 14 tracks, but these somewhat disparate sounds are linked together by the band’s indispensable ear for melody, and a charming sense of whimsy that complements the emotional core of the songs.
Singer / guitarist Lily Rae shines everywhere, displaying a heartfelt yet punchy demeanor, with the honest and honest lyrics of tracks like Lucky Coin – ‘We wake up every morning and pray the end will be quick / The world is just one big dark room that makes you sick‘- proving one of the greatest strengths of this record. Another real asset of Fightmilk is its appetite for catchy and melodic choruses, like those of Overbite, which features charming and simple lyricism (‘I think you are cool / I like your overbite‘) and the featured album Cool Cool Girl, which has all the hallmarks of a contagious future indie-pop anthem.
It’s a lot of fun to be had as the songs fly fast, but to their credit Fightmilk also excels when they slow things down. Dark alt.pop number Girls Don’t Want To Have Fun is expertly crafted, and the kind of emotional, dark but hopeful song that demonstrates the life-affirming power that alternative music can have.
It’s a merry riot from start to finish, and it all comes together to form an adorable, mid-range album that promotes recent work from bands like Dream Nails, Drones and Nova Twins in demonstrating the strength of the modern. UK punk. And when it comes to 2021The best deals to date, Fightmilk are the main contenders.
