Bret Michaels at OC BikeFest to Perform East Coast Teenager
A teenager from Maryland prepares to play guitar with one of his heroes. Gavin Brink, 14, will perform on stage with Bret Michaels on September 17th during OC BikeFest.
One thing that made the teenager want to rock and roll was the energy of the performances he had seen in the videos.
“I was really drawn to their styles and genres of music and stuff like that because I watched live performances and the energy of it all is really inspiring and drew me to this style of music,” Gavin said of Bret Michaels and the Steel Panther group.
OC BikeFest will be the second time Gavin has performed with a rock and roll musician he admires. He performed the song “Panama” with the band Steel Panther during his performance at Dewey Beach on September 12, Gavin’s mother Nicole Charvat confirmed.
Following:OC Bikefest will start with a free concert
Music: OC BikeFest 2021 will come alive with Kid Rock, Bret Michaels, George Thorogood, Brantley Gilbert
Gavin described the Bret Michaels and Steel Panther opportunities as “out of this world”. He practices six to eight hours a day, and has been playing guitar since he was 10 years old. He took classes for two months, then learned from his father and continued to teach on his own.
He sometimes performs with his father’s band, Side Project.
The 14-year-old said his greatest pride was mastering a solo from the song “Eruption” by Eddie Van Halen, who is his favorite guitarist. Gavin performed the solo with his father’s band at Fager’s Island in Ocean City, Maryland, in June – the first time Gavin had performed in front of an audience.
He will join the Side Project again at the Harborside Bar & Grill in West Ocean City at 2 p.m. on October 18.
When asked about his goal as a musician for the next year, the teenager said he hopes to become a rock star.
How will he know he’s achieved rock star status?
“I guess just when I have a band and I really like the material that we put out, and I guess when the fans really like it too,” he said. “That’s really when you hit that, isn’t it? I guess you just have to put out some great music and people love it.”
Gavin and Michaels met earlier this year when Michaels and his music director Pete Evick visited Jeremy Brink’s Ocean 13 restaurant, Elder Brink wrote in a Facebook post.
“After seeing videos of Gavin playing, Bret was so impressed that he invited Gavin to join him on stage for a song at this year’s OC Bikefest,” Jeremy Brink wrote on Facebook.
In addition to playing the guitar, Gavin plays the piano and sings.
