Aly and AJ discuss their first album in 14 years
Almost 15 years after the release of their 2007 album, Insomniac– containing the hit pop-rock single “Potential Breakup Song” – sisters Aly and AJ Michalka, who perform together as Aly & AJ, finally announce a follow-up.
Aly and I initially were like, ‘Well, we don’t want to give this album a personal title. We want to use some sort of phrase from the album or maybe a song title on the album that we can associate with the name of the album, ”AJ says in an Apple Music interview. The Chart Show with Brooke Reese.
“And then we hung out at Sunset Sound where we recorded the record last year, it was probably June or July, and we were outside just figuring out where we wanted this record to go in terms of visuals,” what we were going to do. put as a cover.
To point them in the right direction, the sisters knew they needed an album name. Aly suggested they pull a line from their song, “Don’t Need Nothing.” AJ says, “Aly suggested “ A touch of rhythm gets you to your feet, gets you out and then into the sun. ”“And I was like, ‘It’s hot. “
Born in Torrance, California, sisters Alyson, 31, and Amanda “AJ” Michalka, 29, signed a recording contract with Hollywood Records in 2004 and released their debut album, In the rush, the following year, when the Disney-owned label also broke artists like the Jonas Brothers and Hannah Montana. Aly & AJ released two more albums until 2007 while simultaneously starring in the Disney Channel originals – Aly was a series regular on Phil from the future, and she and AJ later starred in the movie Beautiful cow. They promoted their third album, Insomniac, opening for Miley Cyrus in 2007-08 during her Hannah Montana Arena tour.
The sisters say this whimsically titled record looks like their first. “It’s really wild, but it feels really good,” Aly said, “It feels like it’s been a long journey for us and it’s just a long time to come.”
AJ adds, “It’s not our first rodeo, which is great because we kind of know what to expect. We have already done this. We are getting ready for a tour. We know how to release a record, how to promote a record properly. And so we know what we’re doing. We trust that, but it’s kind of like our baby is stepping out into the real world for the first time. It’s crazy.”
In the process of writing this new collection, Aly & Aj were able to shake off the pressure of writing for radio and playlists and wrote a true portrait of who they are at this point in their careers – capturing versions genuine of ourselves.
“We wanted to know how to bottle and capture the sound of the west coast, the sound of California? What would it be like if it was a soundtrack of your life, what would it look like? AJ said. Songs like the anthem “Pretty Places” capture this freedom of the road with a palpable pop sun.
Aly says the goal is for them to be “hopefully seen in a new and exciting light. That it’s not the Aly and AJ that you necessarily grew up listening to, but there is always comfort, we are still those same girls, we still tell our stories and we write them on guitar and piano, like us. started. We just told these stories as adult women.
Released on May 7 A touch of rhythm gets you to your feet, gets you outside and then into the sun is available everywhere. Listen to Aly & AJ’s full interview on Apple Music The Chart Show with Brooke Reese, here.
